Children of Dub
by Electronik on Jan.09, 2012, under artists
Back in the days of the early rave scene, a naive spiritual idealism spread among the dancing masses like wildfire, leading many to view the late ’80s and early ’90s as a digitized hippie nirvana that hearkened back to the glory days of the analog ’60s. Children of Dub’s down-tempo grooves chronicle the rise and fall of New Age dance culture, with titles such as “Dharma” and “Om” giving way to “Feeling Has Gone” and “Fallen Angel.” Meditative, contemplative vibes abound as chiming piano loops intersect with dark cello melodies over echoing, dubby beats. Drawing a direct link between postmodern digital and ancient tribal cultures, they sample Middle Eastern drumming and chanting at length, interpolating squeaky 303 lines, Dub bass kicks, and washes of spacious ambiance. Slowed-down Trance beats feature the requisite combination of ambiance, sub-bass, and 303s, while smooth breakbeats, dark orchestral production, and jazzy, drifting female vocals lean towards Trip-Hop. Children of Dub’s music will accompany you from the opening of your heart chakra to your vertiginously sudden 5 a.m. comedown. – NENELOW
